OBJECTIVES: This paper has as a goal to investigate the distribution of ill defined deaths ton elderly population, in 1996-2005 period, in Brazil. It has as a main focus the proportion of unattended deaths, that shows significative results in developing countries.
METHODS: The researched data come from the Mortality System of Datasus. The ill defined deaths are included in the 10th revision of ICD, in the chapter XVIII - Symptoms and abnormal findings not classified in another part. This chapter shows the R98 category, the unattended deaths, and it has been used to calculate indicators, standardized to the age structure of the elderly population of the year 2000. The data were analyzed grouped by Federation Units.
RESULTS: The results suggest that, in general, in Brazil this unattended deaths cases notification are falling, but there some Federation Units that presents elevations in those indicators.
CONCLUSION: The mortality data in Brazil must to be improved, since great number of under notification. The fact is that, in Brazil, in general, the unattended deaths cases in the elderly populations are falling, and some Federation Units have rising trends, suggests that policies to provide access to elder people to the public health system have to be revised. It is important to public health managers to pay attention in the occurrence of this event.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and to compare the kyphosis degree and the respiratory pressure in physically active in sedentary elderly women.
METHODS: The sample included 30 elderly women, being 15 active and 15 sedentary, aged between 60 and 70 years. Measures of the maximum respiratory pressures were accomplished (MIP and MEP) and of the kyphosis degree. For the comparison with the values of maximum respiratory foreseen pressures, the formulas of Black and Hyatt (1969) were used. The statistical analysis used the test t of Student, with index of significance established in p < 0.05 or 5%.
RESULTS: The average of the kyphosis values in the active was of 44,4 ± 3,7º and in the sedentary participants was of 56,0 ± 7,2º (p < 0.05). Regarding the respiratory pressures there was significant difference among MEP of the active group (43 ± 14,37 cmH2O) and the sedentary (30,80 ± 12,60 cmH2O). It was verified that the values of MEP in the active group, and MIP and MEP in the sedentary group were statistically lower than those estimated by equation of Black and Hyatt (1969).
CONCLUSIONS: The kyphosis was smaller and the maximal expiratory pressure was larger among the active participants. The formula proposed for prediction of values of MIP and MEP seems doesn't apply to the educated population.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the factors associated with burden and depression on caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease patients at a Health Center of Elderly Care, in the city of Curitiba, PR.
METHODS: Cross sectional study. Informal and primary caregivers of patients with confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease were assessed. The information was collected with scales and a data assessment questionnaire filled by the caregivers. The CES-D scale was used to evaluate the presence of depressive symptoms on caregivers and The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) to measure burden.
RESULTS: Eighty caregivers participated in the study, most of the sample were women (81%) and the average age was 53.3 years old. The mean burden score was 35.2 ± 3.3 and the mean score of depressive symptoms was 16.8 ± 2.3. The variables statistically associated with burden and the presence of depressive symptoms were: caregiver gender (p < 0.01), the quality of premorbid relationship (p < 0.01), the practice of physical activities (p < 0.05) and social activities (p < 0.05) and use of psychotropic medications (p < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: From the evidence of these associations, it's suggested the development of actions in public and private environment which could offer better bio-psico-social suport, with bigger approach to the variables in question.

OBJECTIVE: The study was carried out in the city of Santos, SP (Brazil) with the aim of understanding the meaning of the term beach environment for elderly individuals who regularly attend this natural space for the performance of physical activities.
METHOD: This qualitative study, supported by the gerontology literature, applied the methodological resources of the analysis of oral reports and observations of activities developed by a group of elderly individuals. Volunteers were selected to participate in the study: five men (average age of 71.8 years) and five women (average age of 75.4 years). Socioeconomic data were collected using a questionnaire with closed questions. An open interview with a dialogue nature was then conducted. Data on information from the questionnaire were organized in a databank and later structured in the form of tables to facilitate the reader's understanding.
RESULTS: For the interviewed, physical activity is directly related to the welfare and improvement of health. The beach as a natural area, becomes a space for leisure and socializing, which is also established as an option for practicing exercises. The people also showed a sense of belonging and attachment to place (topofilia) and considered the moment of physical activities on the beach, propitious to make friendship and to increase social network.
CONCLUSION: In reports, the desire to move, to do exercises and the importance attached to health, prevailed, so the elderly do not consider the environment of the beach the determinant factor to make physical activity, however highlight the importance and satisfaction of performing activities in a public environment, natural and very well structured.

Parkinson disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that compromises the dopamine neurons from substantia nigra, leading to a decreasing of dopamine in the corpus striatum, making modulation of movement difficult. It is clinically characterized by the following signs: tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. There are also secondary compromises, of cognitive, affective and autonomic order. This pathology affects elderly people, mainly. The intention of this study is to present the functional changes in Parkinson disease and the current knowledge about Pilates method, in order to show the benefits for bearers of Parkinson disease. Currently, there is phew research in literature focusing this theme, but there's a tendency of showing that Pilates method is beneficiai for patients with Parkinson disease, due to the fact that it reduces the symptoms like bradykinesia, gait and balance disorder, being recognized as one more efficient therapeutic method when treating individuals with Parkinson disease. Researches are necessary, though, with the purpose of substantiating and proving the benefits of Pilates method in Parkinson disease.
